Is AAA Pet Insurance Good? Here's How It Stacks Up

Does AAA offer pet insurance?

The American Automobile Association (known as the "AAA" or "Triple-A") was established in 1902 in Chicago, Illinois by nine motor clubs with about 1,500 members in response to a lack of roads and highways suitable for automobiles. Today, AAA provides more than 60 million members with pet, travel, automotive, financial, and insurance services through its network of 32 clubs and over 1,000 branch offices across North America.

AAA’s pet insurance is administered by Embrace and underwritten by the American Modern Insurance Group, Inc. When this newcomer entered the pet insurance marketplace through their partnership with Embrace, AAA joined the likes of other brands known for member-exclusive savings, such as USAA and Costco.

An overview of AAA Pet Insurance

Available plans

Through Embrace, AAA offers a comprehensive Accident & Illness plan that covers the following:

  • Accidents and illnesses
  • Exam fees
  • Diagnostic testing
  • Chronic conditions
  • Genetic and breed-specific conditions
  • Cancer diagnosis and treatment
  • Emergency and specialist vet care
  • Surgery and hospitalization
  • Alternative treatment and rehab
  • Behavioral treatment
  • Preventable conditions
  • Prescription medications

The company also offers an optional Wellness plan for preventive and routine care called Wellness Rewards. This plan can be added to your pet insurance policy to help reimburse for things like wellness exams, vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery, grooming, training, heartworm/tick/flea prevention, teeth cleaning, etc. You can use your wellness plan for any allowable product or service up to your annual allowance.

Embrace has a 48-hour waiting period for accidents and a 14-day waiting period for illnesses. For orthopedic conditions in dogs, the waiting period is six months but it can be reduced to 14 days by following the company’s Orthopedic Exam and Waiver Process.


Like all providers, AAA won’t cover pre-existing conditions. The list of exclusions also includes:

  • Deliberately caused injures
  • Injuries and illnesses resulting from racing, fighting, neglect, or cruelty
  • Breeding, pregnancy, and whelping
  • Cosmetic and elective procedures like ear cropping, claw removal, and tail docking
  • Stem cell therapy not deemed medically necessary
  • Cloning or DNA testing


Embrace’s cat insurance costs about $15 to $20 a month, whereas dog insurance averages between $30 and $40 a month.

Of course, the final price of your policy will depend on several factors such as the animal’s breed, age, size, gender, and location. However, with AAA and Embrace, customers get the opportunity to customize their policies by choosing from multiple deductibles, reimbursement rates, and annual limits so that you can get the best insurance plan for your pet’s needs and your budget.


The Accident and Illness plan offered by Embrace is quite comprehensive and comes with a 5% Discount for AAA members. This is quite low when compared to other similar companies such as Costco and USAA, whose members get a 15% discount on pet insurance rates.

In addition, Embrace offers a 10% multi-pet discount, as well as an additional 5% discount for military personnel. Customers can also reduce their deductible by $50 for every year they go without an insurance claim reimbursement.

Claims and reimbursement times

The claims are not handled directly by AAA but instead processed by their partner, Embrace, who typically takes ten to 15 business days to process a claim. Customers can submit and track claims through the MyEmbrace app.

What we like about this coverage

AAA allows its customers to create a customized Accident and Illness plan to fit their pet and budget and get up to 90% back on vet bills.

Pet owners can visit any licensed veterinarian, including emergency and specialist vets.

Its members are eligible for a 5% discount which, when combined with the discounts offered by Embrace, can extend up to 20%.

If you find that the insurance policy doesn’t suit you, you can cancel within 30 days and get a full refund.

Once you have signed up for pet insurance through AAA, your pet is covered for life, as long as your premium is paid. Your pet's coverage won't be canceled or reduced based on its health status, age, or the claims you've filed.

Finally, if you purchase pet insurance through AAA, you will also get access to Embrace’s 24/7 pet health line where you can get answers to questions related to your pet’s wellbeing.

What could be improved

To sign up for AAA pet insurance, your pet must have been seen by a licensed vet in the past year or within the first 14 days of your policy before coverage begins.

Embrace’s orthopedic waiting period is six months, which is longer than other providers such as 24PetWatch who has a 14-day waiting period for orthopedic conditions like cruciate ligament tears and hip dysplasia.

Embrace also charges a one-time enrollment fee of $25 and a $1 fee for processing each month.

Is AAA Pet Insurance worth it?

In our AAA Pet Insurance review, we found that the company offers an additional discount on Embrace pet insurance plans, which can be beneficial for AAA members. However, if you don’t qualify for AAA membership, you can apply for pet insurance directly through Embrace.
