When should you consider insurance for your pet?

The sooner the better, as earlier consideration will also help prevent future exclusions due to pre-existing conditions. In other words, you should consider pet insurance before injuries, diseases, or illnesses arise to ensure that any future veterinary bills will be covered by your chosen plan.

Ideally, you should consider pet insurance within the first six months of adopting your pet - regardless of whether you adopt from a shelter, rescue, or breeder.

Hartville tries to process claims as quickly as possible. Most claims are processed in 30 days or less. You’ll receive email updates during the claim process, or you can track your claim progress through the Member Center.

What information do you need to submit your claim?

To submit your claim, the following information is needed:

Your name, address, contact information, and signature on the claim form. A description of the condition and treatment you are claiming. All applicable receipts including an itemized breakdown of the fees incurred.

Cancellation Information

The Hartville Pet Insurance program has next-day cancellation with pro-rated refund depending on if you have received a claim. Cancellation may be dependent on you providing 60-day notice to the insurance company.

The Hartville Pet Insurance program renews policies and has continuous coverage over the lifetime of a pet so long as the pet owner does not break the rules of Hartville's contract.

Pre-existing conditions

Pre-existing conditions are not covered by Hartville Pet Insurance. However, they don’t exclude you from being eligible for pet insurance. Pets with pre-existing conditions should still be covered in case other injuries or illnesses arise.

The specific language used to describe what is considered a pre-existing condition is specified per-policy. Below is Hartville Pet Insurance's latest definition of a "pre-existing condition":

Illness, disease, injury, or change to your pet's health that first occurs or shows symptoms before coverage is effective or during a waiting period. This includes conditions that are related to, secondary, or resultant from a pre-existing condition. A condition will no longer be considered pre-existing if your pet's condition has been cured and free from treatment and symptoms for a period of 180 days. An injury or illness that is cured and free of treatment and symptoms for 180 days will no longer be regarded as pre-existing, with the exception of knee and ligament conditions. If a knee or ligament condition occurs before the coverage effective date or during a waiting period, any future ones won’t be covered.
