Prudent Pet offers customizable plans, transparent pricing, and 24/7 access to a licensed veterinarian through Live Chat. Insurance coverage becomes effective in just five days' time for accident coverage, which is much faster than companies with 14-day waiting periods. Since its founding in 2018, Prudent Pet has earned a 4.8/5 star rating from over a thousand satisfied online reviews — which makes it a strong contender on the list of best pet insurance companies.

  • No lifetime or per-incident coverage limits
  • Optional unlimited annual coverage
  • 5-day waiting period for accidents
  • Claims do not expire while policy is active
  • 24/7 live chat with veterinarians
  • Covers curable conditions after 365 days
  • No maximum age limit for enrollment
  • 30-day money-back guarantee

  • Cannot pay the vet directly
  • Requires an annual health check, annual dental exam, and the use of prescribed prophylactic medication
  • Treatment of your pet arising from a repetitive and specific activity is excluded from coverage if the same or a similar activity has occurred 2 times within the 18-month period prior to the initial coverage effective date

Prudent Pet Insurance plans are customizable, so you only have to pay for the level of coverage you think your pet may need. Plans were created with pet parents in mind, offering comprehensive coverage to help reduce the financial strain of vet bills that many families experience.

  • Hospitalizations
  • Cancer treatments
  • Breed-specific conditions
  • Orthopedic conditions
  • Alternative therapies and holistic care
  • Dental injuries and disease

  • Cremation and burial

What's Not Covered

  • Pre-existing conditions

Routine Care Add-On

Owners looking for ways to make routine pet care more affordable can enroll in an optional wellness plan. For an additional monthly fee, you can get reimbursed for certain preventive veterinary services — such as vaccinations, fecal exams, and microchipping — up to the policy's specified amount. Prudent Pet also offers a policy rider that can cover veterinary exam fees, which can reduce the amount you have to pay out-of-pocket.

Pawlicy Advisor Tip: We recommend adding routine care for pets under age two due to the high number of wellness visits at this age. Older pets may not save money with a routine care add-on. Learn more: Are Wellness Plans Worth It ?

Waiting Periods

All pet insurance companies require you to wait a predetermined amount of time before your policy coverage takes effect. Waiting periods vary by insurance carrier, and some set different time frames depending on the type of vet visit. For example, Prudent Pet coverage starts after a 5-day waiting period for accidents, 14 days for illnesses, has a straightforward, 14-day waiting period for all services, which is faster than many other companies. Wellness coverage is effective immediately.

  • Accidental injuries: 5 days
  • Unexpected illnesses: 14 days
  • Cruciate ligament issues: 180 days
  • Orthopedic conditions: 6 months
  • Wellness coverage: 0 days

If you notify Prudent Pet within the first thirty (30) days from the effective date shown on the policy and this is not a renewal policy, and you have not submitted any claim against this policy, Prudent Pet will refund the entire premium. If you cancel this policy after it has been in effect for thirty (30) days, or if this is a renewal policy, Prudent Pet will return the pro rata premium based upon the date of termination of this policy.

Prudent Pet will automatically renew this policy at expiration, unless you are otherwise notified of nonrenewal. If this policy has been in effect for less than sixty (60) days and the policy is not a renewal, Prudent Pet may cancel the policy for any reason. If this policy has been in effect for sixty (60) days or more, or if this policy is a renewal, Prudent Pet may cancel the policy for nonpayment of premium, your failure to comply with policy terms and conditions, a change in the condition, factor or loss experience material to insurability other than your pet's change in health, or you materially misrepresent or exaggerate relevant information pertaining to this policy or a claim. Prudent Pet will send written notice to you at least sixty (60) days before an unlikely cancellation for non-renewal.
