Founded in 2019, Spot is relatively new in the pet insurance space. The company partnered with the famous dog trainer, Cesar Millan, to help educate pet owners on the benefits of pet insurance. Spot’s insurance policies are underwritten by the Crum & Forster Group, a company who has received an A-rating from AM Best and has experience in the industry since 2006.
Spot Pet Insurance offers an Accident & Illness Policy and an Accident-Only Policy.

Like most insurers, Spot Pet Insurance doesn’t offer pet insurance for pre-existing conditions. However, the company does cover conditions that exist at the time of enrollment if the pet is are considered cured, meaning they are symptom-free and treatment-free for 180 days. This rule does not apply to knee and ligament conditions.
Other exclusions in Spot’s policies include grooming, boarding, elective procedures, cosmetic procedures, breeding, anal gland expression, herbal products, and funeral services.
When it comes to Spot’s pet insurance cost, customers can choose between several different options on the Accident & Illness plan:
By selecting one of each, you have the flexibility to set a price that suits your budget. However, the cost of annual premiums are always based on the pet’s breed, location, and age.
In terms of wellness add-ons, the Gold Preventive Care Plan is quite affordable with a flat monthly rate of $9.95, whereas the Platinum Preventive Care Plan is $24.95 a month.
Spot offers a 10% discount if your employer offers its pet insurance as an employee benefit, as well as a 10% discount for each additional pet insured.
Customers can submit a claim and invoice via email or through the Spot’s mobile app 270 days from the date of treatment. Claim reimbursement averages between ten and 14 days. The status of the claims can be checked through a personalized claims portal.

The mandatory waiting period for accidental claims is 14 days, which is longer compared to some other insurance providers. For instance, AKC Pet Insurance requires a waiting period of only two days before customers can file a claim for an accident.
If your pet had a knee injury before signing up for pet insurance or during the waiting period, Spot won’t cover the second leg in case of an injury as it is considered a bilateral condition.
