What’s the word on Spot Pet Insurance?

Founded in 2019, Spot is relatively new in the pet insurance space. The company partnered with the famous dog trainer, Cesar Millan, to help educate pet owners on the benefits of pet insurance. By requesting a free quote online, customers can also get a free training manual created by the Dog Whisperer.

Spot’s insurance policies are underwritten by the Crum & Forster Group, a company who has received an A-rating from AM Best and has experience in the industry since 2006.

Spot Pet Insurance review

Spot Pet Insurance offers an Accident & Illness Policy and an Accident-Only Policy.

  • The Accidents & Illness Policy allows customers to customize the reimbursement amount, annual limit, and deductible. It covers various incidents and conditions, such as heart disease, behavioral issues, dental disease, hip dysplasia, cancer, diabetes, respiratory infection, and more.
  • The Accident-Only Policy covers costs exclusively related to injuries and accidents, such as bite wounds, foreign object ingestion, torn ligaments, broken bones, and so on. This plan also covers the cost of dog microchipping.

Spot Pet Insurance also offers optional pet wellness plans: Platinum Preventative Care and Gold Preventative Care. These plans differ in price points and benefits, but both cover preventive veterinary services such as:

Exclusions

Like most insurers, Spot Pet Insurance doesn’t offer pet insurance for pre-existing conditions. However, the company does cover conditions that exist at the time of enrollment if the pet is are considered cured, meaning they are symptom-free and treatment-free for 180 days. This rule does not apply to knee and ligament conditions.

Other exclusions in Spot’s policies include grooming, boarding, elective procedures, cosmetic procedures, breeding, anal gland expression, herbal products, and funeral services.

Pricing

When it comes to Spot’s pet insurance cost, customers can choose between several different options on the Accident & Illness plan:

  • 3 reimbursement rates
  • 5 deductible amounts
  • 6 annual limits

By selecting one of each, you have the flexibility to set a price that suits your budget. However, the cost of annual premiums are always based on the pet’s breed, location, and age.

In terms of wellness add-ons, the Gold Preventive Care Plan is quite affordable with a flat monthly rate of $9.95, whereas the Platinum Preventive Care Plan is $24.95 a month.

Discounts

Spot offers a 10% discount if your employer offers its pet insurance as an employee benefit, as well as a 10% discount for each additional pet insured.

Reimbursement times

Customers can submit a claim and invoice via email or through the Spot’s mobile app 270 days from the date of treatment. Claim reimbursement averages between ten and 14 days. The status of the claims can be checked through a personalized claims portal.

What we like about this coverage

Spot has several features that can’t be found in most other pet insurance providers.

  • It can be hard to find pet insurance for older pets, but Spot doesn’t have an upper age limit and will insure any pet that is eight weeks or older.
  • There are is no payout limit per incident or maximum lifetime caps.
  • Spot covers vet visits and exam fees. Pet parents can use any licensed veterinarian in the U.S., including veterinary specialists and emergency care clinics.
  • They also cover alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, chiropractic care, low-level laser therapy, and rehabilitative therapy, as well as prescription food and supplements.
  • Your four-legged friend is covered when they travel with you in the States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and other U.S. territories.
  • The company’s website has a number of helpful resources for pet parents, as well as a tool that shows average vet bill costs related to various treatments and procedures, along with how much your selected Spot pet insurance plan would cover.
  • The company offers a 30-day money-back guarantee if you’re not satisfied with their plan for any reason.

What could be improved

Spot’s plans with the unlimited coverage option are somewhat more expensive than the plans without this option.

The mandatory waiting period for accidental claims is 14 days, which is longer compared to some other insurance providers. For instance, AKC Pet Insurance requires a waiting period of only two days before customers can file a claim for an accident.

If your pet had a knee injury before signing up for pet insurance or during the waiting period, Spot won’t cover the second leg in case of an injury as it is considered a bilateral condition.
