General Information

Figo Pet Insurance was founded in 2013 by Rusty Sproat, who is also the company’s current CEO. The company is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. According to the Figo Pet Insurance website, the company was rated “Best Pet Insurance” by Reviews.com in 2017, 2018, and 2019, and “Best Technology” by Reviews.com in 2020.

Figo’s primary products are its accident and illness pet insurance plans, which are underwritten by Independence American Insurance Company and Markel American Insurance Company. The company also provides customers with the Figo Pet Cloud app, which helps pet parents manage reminders for veterinary appointments, upload and download documents, connect with other pet parents, and even access an emergency veterinarian 24/7.

In January 2020, Figo became the largest independent pet insurance provider in the U.S. and was valued at $125 million.

How Much Does It Cost?

Pet insurance prices for Figo Pet Insurance vary based on your pet's breed, age, gender, and the zip code you live in. Use Pawlicy Advisor to lock in the best price, and compare Figo to other leading pet insurance brands for free.

Figo Pet Insurance lets customers customize their pet’s health insurance plan based on the percentage they are reimbursed for costs, their annual deductible, and their annual limit. All these factors will impact how much you pay monthly as well.

For example, a plan with an unlimited annual limit will provide substantial reimbursement for your pet’s healthcare costs, but you can also expect to pay more per month. Likewise, a lower reimbursement percentage will help you save on monthly costs, but you’ll end up paying more out of pocket for care.

What makes Figo Pet Insurance worth it?

Figo Pet Insurance offers comprehensive coverage of accidents and illnesses at decent prices, which makes it a good option for most pet parents.

One of the biggest benefits of Figo plans is that you can get complete coverage no matter which plans you choose. Even the company’s most basic package provides the same benefits as the higher tiered plans, albeit with a smaller annual limit on coverage. In some cases, you may be able to get 100% coverage for veterinary expenses.

You can customize plans directly through Pawlicy Advisor as well.

Figo processes claims within 30 days of receiving them, but states that its “goal is 7-10 business days.” Payments can go directly into your bank account via ACH to make the reimbursement process faster.

Figo won’t reduce your coverage just because you visit a specialist, either. Like other pet insurance plans, Figo Pet Insurance lets you visit any veterinarian you choose.

Unlike other pet insurance plans, Figo also offers a unique feature: The Pet Cloud. This smartphone app lets pet parents manage important documents, connect with other pet parents, and find pet services in their area.

One thing to note: Figo Pet Insurance doesn’t offer a wellness plan. Figo’s plans don’t cover spaying or neutering, nor will they cover what the company deems “experimental” procedures. Pet parents who want a wellness plan may want to look elsewhere, or they could look for a supplemental wellness plan from another provider if they want to stick with Figo.

What to know before investing in Figo Pet Insurance

When should you consider insurance for your pet?

The sooner the better, as earlier consideration will also help prevent future exclusions due to pre-existing conditions. In other words, you should consider pet insurance before injuries, diseases, or illnesses arise to ensure that any future veterinary bills will be covered by your chosen plan.

Ideally, you should consider pet insurance within the first six months of adopting your pet - regardless of whether you adopt from a shelter, rescue, or breeder.

What's Not Covered

Like most other pet insurance plans, Figo Pet Insurance excludes some types of coverage to keep prices low. These exclusions include:

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Routine, wellness, or preventative care
  • Spaying or neutering
  • Experimental procedures
  • Breeding, pregnancy, or giving birth
  • Cloned pets or cloning procedures
  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Coprophagia (the medical term for "eating poop")

Figo Pet Insurance defines a pre-existing condition as follows:

“A pre-existing condition is a medical condition which first showed signs or symptoms before the effective date of your Figo Pet Insurance policy or which occurred during the policy waiting period. Figo Pet Insurance does not require a veterinary exam to enroll. However, if you cannot provide medical records showing your pet’s annual health exam by a licensed veterinarian occurring within the 12 months prior to the effective date of your Figo pet insurance policy, the first documented veterinary examination after the effective date of the policy may be used as a basis for determining any pre-existing conditions.”

Claims Reimbursement

What information do you need to submit your claim?

  • Completed claims form
  • Original paid invoices
  • Medical records

To process your first claim, your veterinarian must send Figo Pet Insurance the last two years of medical records on the pet, including notes. Your vet can email this information to your Figo Pet Cloud account, fax them to Figo directly at (773) 796-4907 or email them to medicalrecords@insurefigo.com.

How long might it take for your claim to be reimbursed?

Figo pet insurance states that its goal is to complete pet insurance claims within seven business days, but claims can take as long as 30 days to process. Claims can be processed faster if the company receives the requisite information soon after you receive your bill.

If you set up ACH payments with Figo, you can expect payments to be processed within 3-5 business days after your claim is processed. If you prefer to be paid by check, you will typically receive it within 7-10 business days after your claim is processed.

To submit your claim, the following information is needed:

Claims must be reported within one hundred and eighty (180) days. Figo Pet Insurance has a right to seek an independent medical examination of the pet(s) or to obtain the Pet’s veterinary records. You must submit a claim form, completed and signed by you. Along with the claim form you must include the itemized paid receipt or billing statement reflecting the paid charges and the nature of treatment. An electronic claim form, (that Figo Pet Insurance approves), from the attending veterinarian may be submitted for direct payment. You must authorize Figo Pet Insurance to obtain any additional records or other information we deem necessary directly from the veterinarian.

This document is located in Figo Pet Insurance's Pet Cloud under the “Inbox and Docs” icon and can be found within the “Policy Documents” folder.

Pre-existing conditions

Pre-existing conditions are not covered by Figo Pet Insurance. However, they don’t exclude you from being eligible for pet insurance. Pets with pre-existing conditions should still be covered in case other injuries or illnesses arise.

The specific language used to describe what is considered a pre-existing condition is specified per-policy. Below is Figo Pet Insurance's latest definition of a "pre-existing condition":

A pre-existing condition is a medical condition which first showed signs or symptoms before the effective date of your Figo Pet Insurance policy or which occurred during the policy waiting period. Figo Pet Insurance does not require a veterinary exam to enroll. However, if you cannot provide medical records showing your pet’s annual health exam by a licensed veterinarian occurring within the 12 months prior to the effective date of your Figo pet insurance policy, the first documented veterinary examination after the effective date of the policy may be used as a basis for determining any pre-existing conditions.
