Does Allstate offer pet insurance?

Founded in 1931, the Allstate Corporation is an American company well-known for its insurance products. Allstate gives protection to more than 16 million customers across the nation through auto and homeowners insurance (as well as life, health, and business insurance policies) — and now the company offers coverage for pets, too.

It’s important to note that Allstate’s pet insurance policies are administered by another provider, Embrace, and underwritten by American Modern Insurance Group, Inc. So although you can purchase a plan through an Allstate agent, you won’t actually be dealing with the company directly if you need to make claims.

An overview of Allstate Pet Insurance

Available plans

Allstate offers three different plans for pets for varying degrees of coverage:

  • Accident-Only — This option exclusively covers medical pet emergencies. If your loved one has an accidental injury, swallowed something they weren’t supposed to, got hit by a car, or attacked by another animal, you could file a claim to get reimbursed for a portion of out-of-pocket expenses paid toward hospitalization, such as life-saving surgery, overnight monitoring, prescription medications, and so on.

  • Accident & Illness — This is Allstate’s most comprehensive, which promises ‘nose-to-tail’ protection in case your pet gets hurt or sick. It includes coverage for emergency vet visit costs in addition to the standard veterinary care required to treat common health problems in dogs — like diagnostic tests, lab work, physical examinations, and similar essential services.

  • Wellness Rewards — Once you select your desired level of coverage, you can opt to enroll in Allstate’s wellness program for pets, which will act as a “rider” on top of your insurance policy if you choose to sign up. Doing so may provide financial benefits on preventative care, like annual checkups, required dog vaccinations, flea/tick prevention, and professional dental cleaning.

Exclusions

Like all providers, Allstate doesn’t offer pet insurance for pre-existing conditions. The list of additional exclusions includes:

  • Elective and cosmetic procedures, such as ear cropping, declawing, and tail docking
  • Vet fees related to breeding or pregnancy
  • Treatment for behavioral problems
  • Endodontic and orthodontic procedures, like crowns or root canals
  • Dietary supplements and vitamins
  • Prescription pet food
  • Personal care items

Pricing

Compared to the average cost of pet insurance, Allstate’s prices are generally fair, averaging a monthly rate of $15 - $30 for cats and $25 - $40 for dogs.

The company’s site claims that customers can “save big by bundling multiple policies”, so contact an Allstate insurance agent to discuss your options on available discounts.

Claims and reimbursement times

Customers can sign into Allstate’s website to file and track claims online via My Account, or submit claims on the go through the mobile app. Keep in mind, the claims are not handled directly by Allstate but instead processed by their partner, Embrace, who typically takes 10 - 15 days to process a claim.

What we like about this coverage

Allstate pet insurance policies are very flexible, which gives owners the ability to customize a plan that fits their unique preferences and budget restrictions. Customers can tweak how much they pay in premiums upfront vs how much they receive in claim reimbursement later on by choosing a variety of options, including...

  • 5 annual reimbursement limits (the max. amount of money that can be paid out by the insurance provider each year)
    • $5,000, $8,000, $10,000, $15,000, or $30,000
  • 5 deductible amounts (the amount you have to spend on vet bills out-of-pocket before the insurance company will start reimbursing costs)
    • $1,000, $750, $500, $300, or $200
  • 3 reimbursement rates (percentage of the vet bill that insurance will cover through reimbursement)
    • 70%, 80%, or 90%

One big advantage to Allstate Pet Insurance is its coverage of alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, holistic medicine, homeopathy, and hydrotherapy. This provider also covers genetic conditions, like hip dysplasia in dogs, as long as your pet doesn’t exhibit symptoms of the condition before enrollment. Chronic canine diseases like diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and allergies are covered by Allstate, as well.

What could be improved

Allstate has an upper age limit that restricts access to pet insurance for older pets; your cat or dog will need to be under the age of 14 to enroll in a new policy.

Potential customers should read their policy very carefully so they’re clear about coverage limitations. For instance, Allstate policies cover some pet surgeries, but there are certain procedures only available overseas, not within the US.

You should contact an Allstate agent and ask them any questions you may have about how pet insurance works before signing up, but this may prove difficult. Although the Better Business Bureau gives the company an A+ BBB Rating, they’ve earned a score of 1.11/5 from the average of 358 customer reviews.

Is Allstate Pet Insurance worth it?

It’s hard to say because, on the one hand, some owners may stand to save a money on pet insurance costs if they can get coverage for their pet’s chronic condition that’s been denied elsewhere. However, the company doesn’t provide enough information on its price tiers, active discounts, benefit limits, and other key details that could influence your coverage and its usage.

If you already have Allstate Insurance for your home or car, adding pet protection to your plan could provide a quick, convenient solution. Otherwise, the three separate parties involved with enrollment, customer service, and claims could frustrate or confuse customers.
