Does American Modern offer pet insurance?
American Modern Insurance Group is a holding company founded in 1965 in Ohio. The Group is composed of six companies that offer different insurance products to owners of specialty dwellings (such as mobile homes and seasonal homes), as well as recreational and collectible vehicles like snowmobiles, watercraft, and motorcycles. More recently, American Modern added pet insurance and travel insurance to their lineup of offerings.
Their pet insurance policies are underwritten by American Modern Insurance Group Corp, but administered through Embrace Pet Insurance. American Modern Pet Insurance has an A+ (superior) rating from A.M. Best.
An overview of American Modern Pet Insurance
Available plans
Through its partner Embrace, American Modern Pet Insurance offers a comprehensive Accident and Illness coverage that covers chronic conditions, ER and specialist care, cancer treatment, emergency care, specialty care, diagnostic imaging (MRI, ultrasound, X-ray), behavioral therapy, veterinary exams, dental care, and prescriptions.
The company also covers hereditary and congenital conditions such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and IVVD, as well as alternative therapy and rehab.
American Modern offers three different Wellness Coverage plans which can be purchased in addition to an existing Accidents and Illness policy. These plans cover routine care items, such as vaccinations, general checkups, tick, flea, and heartworm medications, spaying and neutering, prescriptions, and dental cleaning.
The waiting period for illnesses is 14 days, for accidents two days, and for cruciate and orthopedic issues it is six months. Pets can be enrolled as young as six weeks old, but the oldest age that you can enroll them is 14 years.
Exclusions
Like other pet insurance companies, American Modern doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions. The company also doesn’t cover breeding, pregnancy, or whelping, elective, preventative, or cosmetic procedures like ear cropping, tail docking, deworming, and declawing (except where medically necessary), as well as cremation or burial.
Pricing
Prices vary widely but, according to the company’s website, pet owners can expect to pay about $15 per month for cats and $35 per month for dogs.
American Modern offers several annual deductible choices, starting from $200 to $1,000. The reimbursement choices range from 70% to 90%, and the annual limits range from $5,000 to $30,000 (in all states except New York where the limit level is $15,000). The company offers unlimited coverage via phone enrollment in most states.
The three wellness plans come with three different limits: $250 allowance, $450 allowance, and $650 allowance that customers can use to cover preventive and routine care services.
Discounts
American Modern gives a 10% discount (5% in New York) for enrolling multiple pets, as well as a 5% discount for full-time military members. Customers can also save $12 if they decide to pay the entire year upfront and get a 5% discount for online payment through a bank. Neutered and spayed pets in the state of New York also get an additional 5% discount.
The company also offers pet insurance discounts for things like enrolling a service animal (such as a guide dog for the sight-impaired) or enrolling through a company plan.
Claims and reimbursement times
American Modern pet insurance claims are handled through Embrace. Customers can upload their claim form directly through Embrace’s online portal, mobile app, or they can choose to mail it or fax it. In general, claims are reimbursed within 14 days.

American Modern’s coverage is quite comprehensive. A full-coverage plan means that all illnesses and accidents are covered (except pre-existing ones), and also includes veterinary exams, diagnostic testing, alternative therapies, prescriptions, and other services that are often left out by other insurers.

What could be improved
One drawback is American Modern’s age limit for pet insurance enrollment. The provider will not insure a new dog or cat if they’re over the age of 14, however, existing policyholders will remain covered for the rest of their life.
Additionally, American Modern lacks a uniform offer for unlimited claim reimbursement, unlike some of their competitors such as Healthy Paws. The unlimited offer is only available if you apply for coverage by phone in some states.
