Is Pet Insurance Worth It?

In this post, our team will look at Travelers pet insurance coverage, pricing, discounts, and more to help you decide if this provider is the right match for your needs.

Here’s what you need to know about Travelers pet insurance:

Does Travelers have pet insurance?

Yes, Travelers offers pet insurance through a partnership with ASPCA Pet Health Insurance. All plans are produced and administered by Crum & Forster (C&F) Insurance Agency and underwritten by the United States Fire Insurance Company.

The Travelers Companies, Inc., commonly known as Travelers, was founded in 1864, originally providing travel insurance to railroad passengers. Today, the company is the second-largest writer of commercial property-casualty insurance in the US, offering a number of coverage types, including auto, home, renters, condo, boat, landlord, travel, umbrella, pet insurance, and more.

Available plans

Through ASPCA Pet Insurance, Travelers offers pet owners its Complete Coverage℠ plan, which is actually the company’s Accident & Illness coverage. This plan covers the following:

  • Illnesses
  • Accidents
  • Hereditary conditions
  • Chronic conditions
  • Behavioral issues
  • Exam fees
  • Dental disease
  • Chemotherapy
  • Diagnostics
  • Treatments
  • Alternative therapies
  • Prescriptions

There is also Accident-Only coverage which includes exam fees, costs of diagnostics, and treatment only for accidents if you want to keep your monthly premium at a minimum.

Pet owners can also include preventive care coverage as an add-on feature for a slightly bigger cost per month. This coverage is on a benefit schedule, which means that it reimburses a set amount of money each month for services that help protect your pet from getting sick, including vaccines, dental cleanings, screenings such as flea/heartworm/ prevention, etc.

Waiting periods

Like most other pet insurers, Travelers also has mandatory waiting periods for pet insurance. The company requires customers to wait for 14 days before their coverage kicks in. This waiting period applies to accidents, illnesses, and orthopedic conditions. The waiting period for accidents is a little longer compared to other pet insurance providers, such as Embrace which has a waiting period of two days for accidents, and Pets Best which requires customers to wait three days before their accident coverage takes effect.

Exclusions

Like other pet insurance providers, Travelers Pet Insurance doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions, as well as cosmetic procedures and costs associated with breeding and pregnancy.

Pricing

Pet insurance prices for the ASPCA Pet Health Insurance program will vary depending on your pet's age, breed, gender, and location.

Pet parents can customize their plan based on the percentage they are reimbursed for costs of vet visits, their annual deductible, and their annual limit. For preventive care coverage, there’s no deductible, co-pay, or waiting period.

Discounts

Travelers Pet Insurance offers a 10% discount for multi-pet insurance policies, as well as a 10% discount for current Travelers policyholders.

However, it should be noted that this Travelers policyholder discount is not available in to those looking for pet insurance in Florida, Hawaii, Minnesota, and Tennessee. In addition, the policyholder discount is 5% in Louisiana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

Claims and reimbursement times

All customer claims are handled by ASPCA. You can file a claim online through the My Pet Insurance app or through the ASPCA website. You also have the option of filling out a printed claim form and sending it in by fax, postal mail, or email. ASPCA generally completes claims in 30 days or less by direct deposit or check.

What we like about this coverage

Travelers Pet Insurance has no upper age restrictions. All dogs and cats** eight weeks and older are eligible for coverage, which makes Travelers great pet insurance for older pets. There are also no vaccination or exam requirements to enroll your pet**.

Customers can use the services of any licensed veterinarian, specialist or emergency clinic in the States and Canada.

The online claims management process is very fast and straightforward, allowing customers to file claims, track the status of their claims, view their policy and coverage, and manage their accounts.

Unlike most other pet insurance companies who have extended waiting periods of six to 12 months for certain orthopedic conditions, Travelers offers a 14-day waiting period for these conditions.

What could be improved

One of the biggest downsides of Travelers Pet insurance is that the rates are not transparent. There’s nothing on the company’s website about how much it will cost to insure your pet. To get a quote, you will need to visit the ASPCA website and use their free quote tool.

Another downside is the defined schedule for wellness benefits.** **The ASPCA's wellness care plan covers specific benefits on an itemized basis.

What insurance companies cover pets?

If you’re interested in adding Travelers pet insurance onto your existing policy for greater financial protection, you might want to check out other insurance companies that cover pets. From renters insurance for dog owners to auto insurance with pet coverage for your furry co-pilot, there are many ways to save while ensuring your loved one always gets the best care.

Some of the most popular insurance companies that cover pets include:

What is pet travel insurance?

Some people search for Traveler’s pet insurance reviews before they fly abroad, go on vacation, or move cities with their dog or cat in tow. However, it’s important to note that pet travel insurance is different from pet health insurance. As the name suggests, pet travel insurance is designed to cover expenses related to issues that occur while your pet is in transit from A to B.

There are also time-limited policies known as “single-trip pet insurance” that some owners get for their pets before traveling. These plans place restrictions on how much and within what time frame you can file a claim but are generally more affordable than traditional pet insurance premiums.

Do I need pet travel insurance?

You’re not legally required to insure pets before boarding an aircraft or traveling abroad, but knowing your pet is covered if an accident were to happen in a foreign country can provide valuable peace of mind.

Not all pet insurance providers cover travel, so if this feature is important to you, it’s important to find one that does. According to ASPCA, the partner behind Travelers pet insurance, they are the first and only company to offer travel assistance services for pets as part of their insurance plans. This includes:

  • Emergency transport
  • Veterinary referrals
  • Concierge services
  • Assistance finding a missing pet
  • Pre-trip checklist

Is Travelers pet insurance worth it?

Due to the fact that its policy pricing is about average for the industry and its pet wellness plan is cheaper, Travelers Pet Health Insurance plans offered through ASPCA are ideal for pet owners on a budget. Travelers Pet Insurance is worth it for owners that already have another type of insurance policy with the provider and can get a 10% discount when bundling policies.

However, according to many Traveler’s pet insurance reviews, the provider doesn’t sell the most comprehensive coverage for the price. If you are not sure whether this is the best option for you, we recommend you shop around a bit to see if you can find a better deal for your money elsewhere.

The best approach is to compare the pet insurance plans side-by-side by using Pawlicy’s comparison tool and go through detailed reviews like those published on our Pet Insurance Advice blog to find protection for your four-legged friend you feel confident about.
