Known as one of the fastest dog breeds around, Greyhounds are sleek, athletic, and independent dogs with an ancient lineage. They have long fascinated poets, kings, and artists with their unique, slender build and fantastic speed. Greyhounds are truly built to run with their narrow skull, tightly tucked waist, and deep chest. It’s believed they were originally bred in Egypt and held by pharaohs for many years before other rulers, such as Alexander the Great and the Tsars, began owning them too.

If you’re the lucky pet parent to one of these gentle, noble dogs, you may be wondering how big will my Greyhound get and when will they stop growing? Our Greyhound growth chart will show you weight estimates for each stage of your puppy’s development.

Here’s everything you need to know about Greyhound weight, size, and growth rate:

Greyhound Weight Chart

12 months old 60 - 70 lb 55 - 65 lb
2 years old 65 - 70 lb 60 - 65 lb

Please keep in mind that the above numbers are estimates of a Greyhound’s weight by age, but all puppies grow at different rates. Don’t worry if your dog is a little ahead or behind.

Your Greyhound’s health is the most important thing. If you have questions about their growth, weight, or health, please consult with your veterinarian.

Pro Tip: Pet parents can get reimbursed for veterinary bills related to illnesses and injuries covered by their pet insurance plan. Compare options for Greyhound health insurance and gain peace of mind knowing your pup has access to gold-standard veterinary care throughout their life.

At what age is a Greyhound fully grown?

Most Greyhounds will need a little over a year to finish growing. You can expect your Greyhound to grow for at least 13 to 14 months, with larger Greyhounds needing up to 18 months to finish filling out their chest.

How big should a 6-month-old Greyhound be?

On average, a male Greyhound weighs around 30 to 40 pounds at six months old. In contrast, a female Greyhound weighs slightly less at 25 to 35 pounds. Both male and female puppies will be quite tall at this point, approaching 20 inches in height.

How much bigger will my Greyhound get?

There are a few ways that you can estimate how much bigger your Greyhound will get:

  1. Age. If your Greyhound is less than a year old, then they are certainly still growing and filling out. After 14 months, your Greyhound may continue to fill out a bit, but any weight gain should not be significant.
  2. Genetics. If you purchased your Greyhound through a breeder, contact them for a more exact estimate of your Greyhound puppy’s adult height and weight. Based on your Greyhound’s parents and past litters, they can give you a more precise estimate of your puppy’s expected adult size. A puppy is rarely bigger than its parent, so this will provide you with a maximum height and weight approximation.
  3. Paw size. Lastly, take a look at your Greyhound puppy’s paws. If their paws look overly big next to their legs and body, then they are probably still growing. Oversized paws are a classic puppy feature indicating that your pup is still filling out!

What is the size of a full-grown Greyhound?

The American Kennel Club Official (AKC) official breed standards suggest the Greyhound weight for adult males should be between 65 and 70 pounds, with 28 to 30 inches in height. The female Greyhound weight is slightly lighter in comparison, falling within a range of 60 to 65 pounds and 27 to 28 inches in height.

A mature Greyhound should have a narrow skull with a lean body and a prominent waist tuck. Compared to other breeds, these dogs may appear excessively thin, but this is due to their natural build and is not an indicator of poor health. Consult with your vet regarding any concerns you may have about Greyhound weight.

How do I make sure my Greyhound is healthy?

Our pets are cherished members of the family who deserve the best care. Unfortunately, like all purebred dogs, Greyhounds are more susceptible to a number of hereditary conditions. As loving pet parents, this can be heart-wrenching to think about, but preventive care can help identify and treat health problems early on.

As a breed, Greyhounds are more susceptible to deafness, arthritis, heart murmurs, and bone cancer, otherwise known as osteosarcoma. When a dog has osteosarcoma, it may have noticeable swelling, limp on the affected limb, wince in pain, or become lame. According to the Veterinary Centers of America, osteosarcoma typically requires surgery and chemotherapy. Without treatment, the prognosis is bleak, as osteosarcoma is a deadly and aggressive form of cancer.

Greyhound Veterinary Costs

Unfortunately, veterinary services can easily cost thousands of dollars, which leaves many pet parents in a bind. Pet insurance works as a safety net by providing a financial buffer should your dog become sick or injured. A policy can reimburse you up to 100% of covered vet costs paid for out-of-pocket, allowing you to focus on what’s truly important: being there for your loved one.

Key Takeaways

  • An adult Greyhound weighs 60 to 70 pounds on average, and males are slightly heavier than females.
  • Greyhound puppies stop growing at around 13 to 14 months old with 27 to 30 inches in height, although it takes a little longer for their chests to finish filling out.
  • The Greyhound breed is prone to hereditary conditions such as arthritis and osteosarcoma.
  • Preventive care helps ensure that your Greyhound puppy lives a happy, healthy life, and pet insurance plans can provide peace of mind with access to affordable health care.
