Samoyeds were bred as hardy sled dogs for some of the harshest weather conditions in the world. The name Samoyed originates from the Samoyedic people, who lived in Siberia over a thousand years ago. As one would expect from a sled dog, the Samoyed has a dense double coat with harsh hair on the outer layer and soft, wool-like hair for their undercoat to keep them warm during brutal Siberian winters. Samoyeds, also known as Sammies, are happiest in a pack and typically miserable if they are frequently left in solitude1.

If you are a pet parent to one of these tireless, social dogs, you may be wondering how big do Samoyeds get and when will they stop growing?

Check out our Samoyed growth and weight chart below for more information about estimating your pup’s adult size.

Here’s everything you need to know about Samoyed size and growth rate:

How big do Samoyeds get?

According to the American Kennel Club Official Breed Standards2, adult male Samoyeds should weigh between 45 and 60 pounds. Female Samoyeds will weigh significantly less at adulthood, typically weighing in between 35 and 50 pounds.

Male Samoyeds should stand around 21 to 23.5 inches tall, while females will be slightly shorter at 19 to 21 inches tall. Both male and female Sammies will have an imposing, athletic appearance that lends itself to endurance and agility.

At what age is a Samoyed fully grown?

Samoyed dogs are full-bodied, medium to large-sized dogs that require more time to grow than smaller dog breeds. As such, you can expect your Samoyed to need a minimum of 12 months to reach their full size. However, many Samoyed puppies will need up to 18 months to fill out completely.

How big should a 6-month-old Samoyed be?

All puppies grow at their own unique rates. However, you can expect most male Samoyed puppies to weigh around 30 to 40 pounds at six months old. Most female Samoyed puppies will weigh between 25 and 35 pounds around this time.

How much bigger will my Samoyed get?

There are several ways to estimate the size of a Samoyed at maturity:

  1. Age. Samoyeds are medium to large-sized dogs that need anywhere from 12 to 18 months to reach their full size. If your Samoyed pup is less than a year old, you can expect that they are still growing. Reference our above Samoyed growth chart to get an idea of how much bigger your Samoyed may get.
  2. Paw Size. Take a look at your Sammie’s paws. If their paws look overly large next to their body, they are probably still growing and filling out.
  3. Gender. Male Samoyeds are notably larger than females. When estimating your Samoyed’s mature size, make sure you consider how your puppy’s gender will affect their final size.
  4. Parents. If you purchased your Samoyed through a breeder, reach out to them about your Sammie’s expected adult size. Based on your puppy’s parents and their past litters, your breeder should be able to provide you with a pretty accurate idea of your Samoyed’s adult size.

What is the average Samoyed lifespan?

The life expectancy for Samoyed dogs is 12 to 14 years, according to the AKC3. Like all purebreds, Sammies are more prone to certain genetic disorders and hereditary conditions, such as:

Glaucoma is painful condition caused by elevated pressure within the eye and can lead to blindness if left untreated. While there is no cure for glaucoma currently, eye drops and medication prescribed by your veterinarian can help to manage the condition and relieve your Samoyed’s discomfort.

Pro Tip: The Samoyed has a very thick coat that insulates their body temperature in cold climates, but can also make them more prone to overheating in hot weather. Be sure you know how hot is too hot for dogs and how to recognize the first signs of heat stroke.

Are Samoyed vet bills expensive?

Pet ownership statistics show that all dogs can be expensive to care for, but some veterinary treatments that are common in these dogs can cost thousands of dollars. For example, your Samoyed puppy might need emergency treatment for a sudden case of bloat, another hereditary condition common in the breed that can be fatal if left untreated. Bloat usually requires immediate emergency surgery and can easily cost $1,500 to $3,000, not including aftercare costs and follow-ups4.

When our loved ones are in pain, financial stress should be the last thing on our minds — that’s the value of pet insurance. It provides you with a safety net so that you never have to hesitate to give your pup the essential veterinary care they deserve. Buy pet insurance and get peace of mind today by knowing your Sammie is enrolled in coverage that could save their life (and your bank account) one day.
