State Farm offers a white-labeled version of Trupanion’s pet insurance plans. This means that they sell Trupanion Pet Insurance plans under the State Farm name. If you purchase a pet insurance plan through State Farm, you will submit your pet insurance claims directly to Trupanion.

Trupanion customers rave about the perks they enjoy, including unlimited annual coverage and the ability to pay vets directly. However, not all vets accept payments directly from Trupanion. There are also a few trade-offs that come with the benefits of Trupanion Pet Insurance.

Read on to learn more about State Farm pet insurance to determine if this provider is right for you and your pets.

Pros

  • Fast processing times on claims with the ability to pay veterinarians directly
  • Same-day coverage available with some in-office promotions
  • No minimum age limit for enrollment
  • Customizable deductible
  • No annual payout limit
  • Option to expand coverage through policy riders

Cons

  • Less flexible than other plans
  • Does not offer a Wellness Plan
  • Does not offer an Accident-Only plan
  • Lifetime per-incident deductible
  • Requires annual dental exams
  • Requires supplemental coverage for holistic care, alternative therapies, and behavioral conditions

JUMP TO:

State Farm was founded in 1922. It is now the largest property, casualty, and auto insurance provider in the United States.

Unlike most insurance companies, State Farm uses a unique sales model, employing exclusive or "captive" agents for its insurance products. This means that only agents working for State Farm can sell its insurance, and they are restricted to selling only products offered by State Farm.

State Farm began offering pet insurance in 2018 through a partnership with Trupanion, which has been in business since 2000. Customers in all 50 states and the District of Columbia can enroll in Trupanion Pet Insurance through State Farm.

What's Covered

  • Breed-specific conditions
  • Congenital conditions
  • Chronic conditions

Optional Add-Ons

State Farm does not offer a Wellness Plan for routine care coverage, because it is not available through Trupanion. However, you can expand your benefits with supplemental policy riders, which allow you to get reimbursed for other types of pet-related expenses that fall outside of the standard policy coverage. Here's a look at the benefits included with each rider, which you must choose and pay for in order to apply:

Pet Owner Assistance Package

  • Liability coverage for third-party property damage
  • Lost pet advertising and reward
  • Boarding fees
  • Holiday vacation cancellation costs
  • Cremation or burial fees

Recovery and Complementary Care Rider

  • Rehabilitative therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Chiropractic
  • Behavioral modification therapy
  • Homeopathy
  • Naturopathy

Breeding Rider

For coverage of Injuries related to...

  • Breeding
  • Whelping
  • Queering

Pawlicy Advisor Tip: We recommend adding routine care for pets under age two due to the high number of wellness visits at this age, which is not offered by State Farm. Before choosing this provider, decide if Wellness Plans Are Worth It.

Waiting Periods

When you sign up for pet insurance, there is a mandatory waiting period before your coverage becomes effective and you become eligible for claim reimbursement. These waiting periods vary by insurance provider.

The waiting period for Trupanion Pet Insurance through State Farm depends on the type of incident you need coverage for:

  • Accidents: 5 days
  • Illnesses: 30 days
  • Orthopedic conditions (including hip dysplasia, luxating patella, and intervertebral disc disease): 30 days
  • Cruciate ligament injuries: 30 days

All pet insurance waiting periods may vary by location; refer to your policy documents for an exact coverage start date.

How it Works

State Farm Pet Insurance works by reimbursing 90% of your eligible veterinary expenses through Trupanion. You are responsible for the remaining 10%, also known as co-insurance, along with the monthly or annual insurance premium.

1. Find a vet that accepts Trupanion payments when your pet has an unexpected illness or injury to minimize out-of-pocket expenses.

2. Your vet submits the invoice directly to Trupanion. They pay for 90% of covered vet costs, and you cover the remaining balance.

3. If your vet doesn't accept Direct Pay, download a claim form and submit an itemized invoice via fax, mail, or email.

4. Get reimbursed for a portion of your vet bill either by check or direct deposit, typically in as little as 24 hours.

How to File a State Farm Pet Insurance Claim

  • Window to File: within 90 days of the date of treatment
  • Filing Requirements: itemized invoice, medical history review
  • Average Claim Reimbursement: 70% of claims are paid within 24 hours
  • Reimbursement Methods: check or direct deposit

State Farm Pet Insurance Cost

The lowest starting cost for State Farm Pet Insurance is about $63 per month for dogs and $29 per month for cats with Accident & Illness coverage. The actual cost of pet insurance you can expect to pay will depend on your location, pet breed, and chosen deductible. Unfortunately, Trupanion does not offer an Accident-Only option or a reduced policy limit, which could otherwise lower your premium rate.

State Farm Customer Service

State Farm has received positive reviews on Trustpilot as well as numerous complaints. However, those complaints are not about State Farm Pet Insurance, which is Trupanion. Instead, they relate to State Farm’s other insurance and banking products.

Most customers give Trupanion positive reviews on Trustpilot, saying the insurance has been a “lifesaver” for them when their pets are diagnosed with serious conditions. Trupanion has allowed customers to get their pets the care they need without having to worry about the costs.

Other reviewers say Trupanion’s customer service representatives are friendly and knowledgeable, and that they care deeply about customers and their pets. The reviews also say that Trupanion representatives respond quickly to inquiries.

Nonetheless, some customers complain about the cost of their Trupanion plans. They say their monthly premiums have increased unexpectedly. Trupanion’s monthly premiums may increase as pets age or if the pet moves to a new location.

Expert Insights

Is State Farm worth it?

"Trupanion Pet Insurance through State Farm is a good option if you’re looking for comprehensive accident and illness coverage that pays your veterinarian directly. Trupanion covers hereditary conditions, congenital conditions, and unexpected accidents and illnesses. It also covers medical procedures like surgeries, hospital stays, medications, and even supplements.

Trupanion’s policy on hip dysplasia is more generous than many other providers. You can also get coverage for alternative pet care like acupuncture, which isn’t offered by every provider. Trupanion reimburses 90% of covered costs as a standard in most states except Florida, Texas, Arizona, and Maine (where they offer 50% to 90% co-insurance levels) with no payout limits, which is more generous than many other pet insurance policies.

The cost of Trupanion might be a sticking point for some pet parents. Pet parents who aren’t already State Farm customers may also want to purchase their policy directly through Trupanion instead of going through State Farm.

Pet owners with older pets may want to look elsewhere as well since Trupanion won’t cover pets over 14. But if you enroll your pet while they are still young, you can expect a lower monthly premium and more lifelong value for your plan. You might also want to shop with another pet insurance provider if you’re interested in a wellness plan, as Trupanion does not currently offer one.

Before purchasing a Trupanion policy through State Farm, make sure your vet accepts direct payments from Trupanion. You can call your veterinarian and ask, or use Trupanion’s website to determine if your vet is enrolled. If you don’t want to spend time collecting quotes from pet insurance companies, start your search on Pawlicy Advisor. You can compare multiple policies from top providers in one place."

The Reason I Changed

The reason I changed [my] rating from 5* to 1* ( I was buying [an] umbrella policy): The agent was very nice and [the] premium was great. Then problems started. Got a request to make some changes to my auto policy. Did it. Got a request to get a letter my from auto insurance to verify that my wife was not a driver. Ok, no problem. Then I got a cancellation notice for the policy and a refund check for 2/3 of what I paid (paid - Feb 1, refund - March 3). Called agency, they said not to worry, they will take care of it. Finally got a contract, but with premium $688 instead of original $390! Looks to me like a classic bait and switch. I cancelled the deal and will never do business with the State Farm again.

Overall Great Experience

My experience is based primarily on my experience treating a seriously ill pet.

My review is based primarily on my past experiences with the company. My wife and I have had Trupanion insurance for our dogs for a number of years. We recently lost our beloved female Lab to cancer and living in the Northeast the costs of medical care for animals is quite high. Our lab was treated over a period of nearly six months and without Trupanion we would not have been able to afford her treatments.
